MARKET OVERVIEW

Welcome to Winnipeg!
With our Golden Boy, atop the Legislative Building, facing north lighting the way for prosperity, Winnipeg has a million stories and a rich and colourful history. From the General Strike of 1919 which was one of the major movements in Canadian Labour History to the 1999 Pam Am Games, from new discoveries such as Canola which today is a $2.5 Million industry in Canada, to our renowned Guess Who, Winnipeg is as diverse and appealing as cities double it's size.

Winnipeg, Canada's eighth largest city has a population of just over 680,000 and is located in the geographic centre of North America. It's excellent location allows for effective service to all of North American time zones.

Winnipeg is the largest distribution centre in Canada between Vancouver on the West Coast and Toronto in the east. The city is central to both of Canada's national rail systems. In conjunction, many of Canada's top inter-provincial freight carriers are headquartered in the Province. Our Winnipeg International Airport is one of the only 24-hour international airports in Canada and is one of the most reliable airports in the world with an average of less than two hours downtime annually.

Winnipeg is home to Canada's largest furniture manufacturer and two of its largest window manufacturers and also known as Western Canada's largest and most diversified aerospace centre. World-class companies included Standard Aero Ltd., Boeing Canada Technology and Bristol Aerospace Ltd. Winnipeg is ranked the third largest garment production centre in Canada home to such firms as Mondetta, Gemini Fashions, Nygard International and Western Glove Works.

One of the province's fastest-growing industries is information and telecommunications. In particular, there has been a rapid expansion of call centres thanks to Manitoba's strategic advantages. Manitoba is one of the first provinces to establish an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) fibre backbone network, allowing economical advanced services such as multimedia applications, for most of Manitoba's larger communities.

The second-fastest growing sector in Manitoba is in financial services. Winnipeg, the historical financial centre of western Canada, is headquarters to Great-West Life Assurance Company, Canada's largest insurance firm. Headquarters for Investors Group, Canada's largest mutual fund company as well as to Assante Corp., the largest network of mutual fund sales-people in the country call Winnipeg home.

Our Exchange District has been designated as a National Historic site by the Canadian Government due to its rich collection of turn-of-the-century terracotta and stone cut buildings, unrivalled in the world.
